Building the Future of Cannabis Commerce, One Innovation at a Time

Weedsies Marketplace founded by Henry Calix

The Weedsies Story Begins with a Vision

A Vision That Started with a Problem. Weedsies was born from a simple realization: the cannabis industry was fragmented, difficult to navigate, and missing the kind of technology that had transformed every other major retail sector. That realization came from Henry Calix, founder and CEO of Weedsies, whose background in technology and entrepreneurship shaped the company’s mission from the beginning.

Before launching Weedsies, Henry saw firsthand how dispensaries, smoke shops, and emerging brands struggled to reach customers online. At the same time, consumers lacked a centralized place to discover products easily and responsibly. Rather than building another store, Henry envisioned a marketplace—one that could connect vendors and customers the way Amazon and Shopify transformed traditional retail.

That vision became Weedsies.

From Idea to Launch: How Weedsies Got Started

Henry Calix acquired the Weedsies.com domain in 2017, long before cannabis marketplaces were widely discussed. For years, he worked on the platform’s architecture, funding development personally and refining a model that could support vendors across multiple sectors of the industry.

In April 2020, Weedsies officially launched as an online marketplace designed to bring hemp, CBD, and cannabis-related businesses together under one digital roof. The timing was bold. The launch happened during the height of the pandemic, when many businesses were shutting down. Instead of slowing growth, that moment accelerated demand for online access and delivery-focused solutions.

Weedsies didn’t position itself as a competitor to dispensaries or brands. Instead, it became a technology partner, offering vendors tools to sell online, manage inventory, and reach customers without the overhead of building their own platforms.

National Recognition and the “Amazon of Cannabis” Moment

As Weedsies grew, national media began taking notice.

In 2022Time Magazine interviewed Henry Calix as part of its coverage on how technology platforms are reshaping cannabis access and commerce. The interview focused on Henry’s journey, the challenges of operating in a highly regulated space, and Weedsies’ role in modernizing how consumers discover products.

In the same editorial coverage, Time Magazine also interviewed the CEO of Leafly, offering multiple perspectives on how digital platforms are influencing the future of cannabis discovery. While the interviews were conducted separately, Time’s reporting positioned Weedsies among the most disruptive companies in the industry.

Within that context, Weedsies was described as “the Amazon of cannabis”—a comparison that reflected its marketplace model, scale, and long-term ambition.

Taking the Brand to the Streets: Weedsies Mobile Trucks

While the online platform continued to expand, Weedsies pushed innovation offline.

In April 2021, the company launched Weedsies Mobile, a fleet of branded trucks inspired by classic ice cream trucks. These mobile units brought products directly into local communities, offering adults a way to experience brands in person while discovering vendors available on the Weedsies platform.

The trucks quickly became rolling billboards and community touchpoints. They weren’t just about sales—they were about visibility, education, and fun. Customers who discovered products through the trucks could later find those same brands online, creating a seamless loop between physical experience and digital convenience.

Through a joint venture, Weedsies helped launch age-verified vending kiosks designed to provide fast, compliant access to products in approved locations. These machines use modern technology, including verification systems and connected inventory, to ensure responsible access.

Smart Vending Machines and a Joint Venture Expansion

Innovation continued in 2022 and 2023 with the introduction of Weedsies smart vending machines.

In 2023, this effort expanded further with the creation of Weedsies Vending LLC, a joint venture that brought branded kiosks to more locations across Florida.

Financial and Tech Industry Spotlight

Weedsies’ growth also caught the attention of financial and technology media.

In 2022, the launch of the Weedsies mobile app was featured on Nasdaq’s platform, highlighting the company’s continued expansion and its role as a tech-driven marketplace.

These moments marked an important shift—Weedsies was no longer just a cannabis startup, but a technology company operating at scale.

Leadership, Awards, and Momentum

Henry Calix 40 under 40

Henry Calix’s leadership has been recognized beyond media coverage. He has been named to a 40 Under 40 list, honoring young founders making a meaningful impact in their industries. The recognition reflects both personal achievement and the broader momentum behind Weedsies.

These milestones validate the company’s approach: building patiently, innovating responsibly, and investing in long-term infrastructure rather than short-term hype.

The Weedsies Boutique: Bringing Community Full Circle

The newest chapter in the Weedsies story is the Weedsies Boutique.

Designed as a curated physical space, the boutique brings the brand’s marketplace philosophy into a more personal environment. It’s a place where customers can explore products, learn, connect, and engage with the Weedsies community beyond a screen.

The boutique represents a full-circle moment—combining digital innovation with real-world connection.

Joining the Weedsies Journey

Weedsies is more than a platform. It’s a growing ecosystem built around vendors, customers, and shared progress.
